Ditch the Rule Book: It’s Time Business Got Back To Basics

I was recently speaking with Gustavo Tanaka (author of that postabout the changing world we live in, the collaborative economy and lots more.

But one thing he said really struck a chord:

“When building our businesses (from our incubator here in Sao Paolo) we look to nature, not Silicon Valley for the answers”

Which reminded me of how complex we’ve made things.

The natural world has survived for millions of years, the business world just hundreds. Yet still, we ignore the world around us and look to business leaders for the answer.

Forward-thinking authors like Gustavo, Frederic Laloux and others are shining a light on new models of business that take us back to our roots and mimic nature — models based on collaboration, sustainability & innovation.

“When nature has work to be done, she creates a genius to do it.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

But not only do we need to look to nature for the systems and processes to learn from, but also essential time away from the day-to-day hustle and our ever-on devices.

Nature has a way of bringing in perspective you’ll never otherwise get.

For the last 3 years we’ve been putting on transformational experiences in natural locations whether a week-long Alpine adventure, away days in a cabin, workshops on the beach or our annual AGM on a farm.

And these have all led to game-changing relationships, ideas and inspiration that would never have been unlocked in a traditional setting.

So, where to start?

Burgeoning fields like biomimicry and permaculture are as good a place as any. As is Frederic’s groundbreaking book Reinventing Organisations.

Or take part in #FreeRangeFridays where you lose the office for a day and take business free range by going on a walkshop or even netwalking.

Nature has the answers. You just need to go find them.
